ENSREG establishes a 10-year indicative schedule for International Peer Review Missions in EU Member States.

The Nuclear Safety Directive (1) requires that the EU Member States shall, at least every 10 years, arrange for periodic self-assessments of their national framework and competent regulatory authorities and invite an international peer review of relevant segments of their national framework and/or authorities with the aim of continuously improving nuclear safety.

ENSREG has unanimously recommended that in order to comply with this requirement, the best way forward is by cooperation between the EU Member States and the IAEA IRRS (Integrated Regulatory Review Service) programme. For this purpose, a dedicated European programme of IRRS missions has been established.

In order to facilitate the development of this European programme, ENSREG is developing, in cooperation with the IAEA, an indicative schedule for IAEA IRRS peer review missions in the EU Member States, which includes self-assessments and follow-up missions, based on inputs received from its Members. This timetable spans the period 2011- 2021 and will be updated regularly.

The formal confirmation of the planning remains a matter between the EU Member States and the IAEA.
